Paying Your Fare

 

RRTA offers several choices to pay your fare when riding.
If paying in cash, RRTA requests that you have exact fare. RRTA operators do not carry money to make change.

Full Cash Fares

Children age 5 and under ride free when accompanied by a full fare paying passenger.

Student Fare

Student Fares apply to grades K-12. High school students must show proof of student status to obtain the discount rate when paying fares.

Half Fare Program

The Half Fare Program is for persons with qualifying disabilities to receive half off the cash fare during non-peak hours. Persons under age 65 with a Medicare card qualify for this program. Customers who have a Half Fare ID card, can ride at half the cash fare all day weekdays except between 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. On weekends, the half fare discount can be used all day. A Half Fare ID card must be shown to receive the discount. An application for the Half Fare card must be completed to be eligible for the Half Fare program. Applications can be picked up at the RRTA Information Center or the RRTA Operations Center or one can be sent to you in the mail. Just call RRTA and we will be happy to mail you one.

You can also purchase 10 Ride passes at half price in the Half Fare Program. The Half Fare ID card must be shown at time of purchase.

Senior Citizen Free Ride Program

Seniors ride free with RRTA!

If you are age 65 or older, you can ride FREE through the Senior Free Ride Program, which is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Lottery. Eligible seniors may ride any RRTA bus route for FREE any time!

A PA Department of Transportation Senior Citizen ID Card or Medicare card is valid identification.

RRTA recommends that all seniors interested in riding RRTA for free obtain the State Transit ID card. This will ensure that other important identification cards are not lost while riding the bus. To obtain a State Transit ID card, a brief application must be filled out. An application can be mailed to you or you can fill one out at our RRTA Information Center at Queen Street Station or the RRTA Operations Center. A proof of age is required to recevie the ID card. The following are the acceptable proof of age documents:

  • Valid Driver's License
  • Birth Certificate
  • Armed Forces Discharge or Separation Papers
  • Passport or Naturalization Papers
  • PACE card
  • Statement of Age Verification (issued by Soc. Sec. Office)
  • Baptismal certificate
  • PennDot non-drivers license
  • Veteran's Universal Access Card
  • Resident Alien Card

Transfers and Zone Fares

If you have to change from one bus to another to complete your one-way trip, ask the driver of your first bus for a transfer when you pay your fare. The transfer is 5 cents and is good for your base fare. You will pay the 5 cent transfer charge on the second bus, plus any additional zone charges if any zone boundaries are crossed. The transfer can be used until the latest time printed on it. A transfer cannot be used for a return trip on the same or nearby routes.
